To become a competent costs lawyer it is essential to have an understanding of the development of the law on costs and the impact on the role of a costs lawyer, to be able to critically discuss when an entitlement to costs may arise and explain the process, required pleadings/documentation and content at all stages in costs matters. Additionally it is essential to apply knowledge to produce accurately drafted costs pleadings and other process documentation.

This module will initially take you through the early practice of costs, some important terminology which you will be required to understand, costs orders and when an entitlement to costs may arise. Consideration will then be given to the summary assessment process and budgeting with which costs lawyers are involved before assessment proceedings costs have even been commenced. Thereafter you will be introduced to costs pleadings and the assessment process. Finally you will learn about the post assessment process and appeals.
